Fantasy
Fantasy is the most surreal picture genre as it describes not only the events that have never occurred in the real life but also involves characters that exist only in the imagination of their creator. Typical time of the events marching is the Middle Ages, age of heroes and their activity. The fantasy pictures have a lot in common to historical-adventure pictures their plots are rather alike. The difference between those two genres is that the characters of fantasy are surreal, they have fictional names and perform fictional activity. Films of fantasy genre became rather popular and admired by a great number of people all around the world. There even appeared broad subculture formed by those who consider themselves fantasy-lovers. First this culture wasn't really broad but with the laps of time the quantity of its followers was constantly multiplying and reached rather high point. So, the culture of fantasy-films' admirers became rather broad and even divided into several subcultures, for example the subculture of tokenisms appeared.
Actually Tolkien is the most famous writer of the fantasy genre and films based on the fantasy stories of Tolkien brought popularity for fantasy genre in literature and cinematography. Quest is the typical plot of the fantasy films. quest is such kind of plot according to which the events of the whole movie develops around the main aim – to find a special plays or thing in order to prevent evil capture the world. So heroes are put on trial by different evil powers. The aim of heroes is to defeat all evil and the aim of evil to make barriers on the heroes' way or to stop them. As a rule every fantasy ends with happy end: absolute evil and its assistants are defeated, secrete or sacred thing found, in two words good defeats evil, as usual.
The movie that is considered as the beginning of the fantasy subculture and the movie that is considered as the most famous of fantasy genre is "The Lord of the Rings" based on Tolkien's fantasy story. "The Lord of the Rings" is the emblematic picture of the fantasy genre. In this movie one may find all features of the typical fantasy movie. There are surreal creatures created not by nature but by the imagination of the writer, there is a sacred thing (rings that must be found in order to prevent evil rule the world) and off course evil powers that were trying to stop heroes. The main character of the picture is Frodo Baggins, hobbit that was chosen to find five powerful rings and perform the trip for them. On his way to the aim Frodo meets friends that want to help them, all of them are also mystical creatures like elves, goblins etc. Strictly speaking all of the characters of the picture are fictional; there is no single real creature: hobbits instead of humans, unicorns instead of horses and many other mystical characters instead real.
